History
Built between 1901 and 1903, the house emerged during Lütke and Backes’s most productive years as partners—a collaboration that spanned 1898 to 1907. Both architects were German-trained professionals who helped define Strasbourg’s architectural character following its return to French sovereignty. The building’s construction predates reinforced concrete’s widespread adoption, making its structural approach notably innovative for the period.

The design achieves an effect of grace and airiness—described as “souple et léger” (lithe and light)—through carefully proportioned fenestration and ornamental detailing typical of Art Nouveau. The reinforced concrete frame permits expansive windows and eliminates heavy load-bearing walls, giving the facades an open, rhythmic quality. Decorative elements follow the sinuous curves and naturalistic forms characteristic of the movement.
Cultural significance
The building ranks among Strasbourg’s finest examples of residential Art Nouveau. Lütke and Backes created a body of work that transformed the Neustadt into one of Europe’s most cohesive Art Nouveau ensembles. Several of their other commissions—at 46 Avenue des Vosges, 56 Allée de la Robertsau, 4 Rue Erckmann-Chatrian, and 24 Rue Twinger—also carry protected status, testifying to the durability and quality of their vision.
