Announced in November 2023, Palazzo Grimani Museum in Venice hosted a lecture series on Venetian-Portuguese relations during the early modern period, organised by Itinerarte Studium in collaboration with Portugal’s honorary consulate in Venice.
Lecture Series and Themes
The three lectures were delivered by Professor Julieta Teixeira Marques de Oliveira from Ca’ Foscari University’s Department of Comparative Linguistic and Cultural Studies. The series examined relations between Venice and Portugal from the 15th century onwards, based on archival research conducted primarily at Venice’s State Archive. The professor’s research was compiled in a two-volume work, Veneza e Portugal no Século XVI: subsídios para a sua História, published in 2000 by Portugal’s national mint, Impresa Nacional-Casa Moeda in Lisbon.
Schedule and Additional Speakers
The first lecture, held on December 1 at 5 p.m., covered Venetian-Portuguese relations from the 15th century to the mid-16th century. On December 13 at 5 p.m., Giuseppe Gullino, former professor of early modern history at the University of Padua, joined the discussion on political and diplomatic relations from the mid-16th century through the 1580 crisis. The final lecture on December 20 at 5 p.m. addressed relations from 1580 to the end of the century, with remarks by Raffaele Santoro, former director of Venice’s State Archive. All lectures concluded at 6:30 p.m.
