The name “Spedali Riuniti” predates this construction, originating from earlier institutional reforms that merged the hospitals of Sant’Antonio and della Misericordia. The name was officially reinstated in 1898. When the new complex was built under the presidency of hospital administrator Giuseppe Costa, it was formally named after Costanzo Ciano, a Fascist hierarch. Scholars have noted that Ciano did not contribute to the building’s construction but was adept at associating his name—or those of family members—with major public works in his native city.
