1. The Foundation (1927)
In April 1927, the Odawara Express Railway Co., Ltd. (now Odakyu Electric Railway) commenced operations, opening an impressive 82.8-kilometer line between Shinjuku (Tokyo) and Odawara in a single day.
2. Development and Industrial Impact
Following the devastating 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, the rapid expansion of Tokyo’s suburbs necessitated efficient commuter transit. Toshitaka Ando, the visionary behind Odakyu, recognized the potential of a high-speed electric railway linking the capital to the scenic Hakone region and the growing suburban belt. Despite severe financial hurdles during the Showa financial crisis, the railway pioneered express commuter services. It played a fundamental role in the urbanization of western Tokyo, transforming sleepy agricultural villages into bustling residential and commercial hubs.
