In March 1929, the Chilean government under Arturo Alessandri founded Línea Aeropostal Santiago-Arica, which soon evolved into LAN Chile. Created to bridge the immense geographic divides of the elongated nation, it became the cornerstone of what is now LATAM Airlines Group.

Operating in one of the most geographically challenging environments in the world—bordered by the towering Andes and the vast Pacific Ocean—LAN Chile initially focused on mail delivery and passenger transport using single-engine aircraft. Its pilots navigated treacherous routes without modern instruments, linking remote northern outposts with the capital. Over the decades, LAN modernized its fleet, expanded internationally, and underwent privatization in 1989. Its strategic acquisitions and commitment to operational excellence positioned it as the dominant carrier in South America.

Following its merger with Brazil’s TAM in 2012 to form LATAM, the airline now operates one of the most comprehensive networks in the Southern Hemisphere. The pioneering spirit of 1929 remains at the heart of South America’s largest aviation conglomerate.
