The North of Venice: Cannaregio — Filmed by Andrea Manzo

Ten places across Cannaregio, each opened by a short video filmed and narrated on site by Andrea Manzo: the two Ghetto squares, a cinema that became a supermarket, the palace of the Turkish merchants, Codussi on the Grand Canal, a round church with an eye over the door, four stone men in a wall, Sansovino’s hall that was a basketball court, the last bridge without a parapet, and the narrowest street in the city.

About this virtual tour

Ten stops through Cannaregio, the northern district of Venice, each opened by a short video that Andrea Manzo filmed and narrated in English on the spot. The walk starts in the Ghetto, established by the Republic in 1516, and ends in Calle Varisco, which narrows to fifty-three centimetres before it reaches the canal.

In between: a 1916 cinema by Giovanni Sardi that is now a supermarket, the Fondaco dei Turchi, Codussi’s Ca’ Vendramin Calergi, where Richard Wagner died in 1883, Tommaso Temanza’s round church of the Maddalena, the four stone men of Campo dei Mori, Sansovino’s Scuola Grande della Misericordia and Ponte Chiodo, the last bridge in the city without a parapet.

The route is 3.4 km on foot, about 45 minutes of walking; with time at each stop, plan on two and a half hours. You can also follow it from home: every video plays on this page, stop by stop.
