Roman sanctuary of Jupiter Balmarcod above the Beirut river, with a second temple, baths, olive presses and a sixth-century basilica built inside a bath hall. The Antonine Maronite Order has held the hill since about 1748.
Foundation of Murad II on a hill above the Saray plain, its door inscription dated 1435-36. The mihrab wall carries the earliest underglaze blue-and-white tiles of the Ottoman world; the dervish lodge, demolished in 1935, has been rebuilt.

Aksum, UNESCO-listed since 1980, was the capital of an ancient empire that traded with Rome and India and adopted Christianity around 330 CE. The city holds roughly 120 granite stelae — including a 24-metre obelisk looted by Mussolini in 1937 and returned after 68 years — as well as the chapel that Ethiopian Orthodox tradition identifies as the resting place of the Ark of the Covenant.
