Budapest’s signal tower: the gasworks utopia at Óbuda
The Óbuda gas works stands on the Danube bank, and it was built like a small state: production halls, mushroom-shaped gasholders, villas for the administrators, an estate for the workers. Hosszúlépés Járunk walks the whole of it in 150 minutes.
The route takes in the renovated factory buildings that now form part of Graphisoft Park, the villas of the old administrative settlement, and the workers’ housing complex. It ends at the top of the works’ clock tower, whose terraces open over the city. The walk includes underground sections and a long climb: the tower has a great many stairs.
Guiding is in Hungarian.
