Massimo Eccli was born in Verona and grew up in San Zeno di Montagna, on the Veronese shore of Lake Garda. A languages graduate of the University of Bologna, he has lived in Moscow since 1998, where he has taught at the Moscow City University (MGPU), at Gymnasium 1409 and at the Russian State Library, and now teaches in the Moskovskoe Dolgoletie programme.
For years he has researched the history of the Soviet partisans who fought in the Italian Resistance. His census documents more than five thousand Soviet citizens who took part in the Resistance in Italy and over five hundred fallen, among them Fyodor Poletayev. With Sandro Teti he wrote «I partigiani sovietici nella Resistenza italiana» (Sandro Teti Editore, Historos series edited by Luciano Canfora, preface by Mikhail Talalay), also published in Russian in the series «Pamjat’ Velikoj Pobedy» (“Memory of the Great Victory”).
