An editorial look at the history of Sweden’s largest technical university and its role in European research and education today.
KTH Royal Institute of Technology began its story in 1827. It was a time when industrial change was reshaping societies, and Stockholm needed a new kind of institution. From those beginnings, KTH grew into Sweden’s largest technical university. It is a public research university, located in the Swedish capital.
Early Foundations
The institution’s founding in 1827 placed it among the earliest technical schools in Europe. It was created to provide practical and scientific training. This was a shift from older, more purely academic traditions. The aim was to serve industry and infrastructure with new skills.
For much of its life, KTH expanded alongside the city of Stockholm. Its presence shaped the area around its main campus. The university became a fixed point in the city’s educational landscape. Over the decades, its buildings and grounds have registered that long development.
Structure and Growth
In more recent times, KTH has continued to evolve. Since 2018, it has consisted of five schools. These operate across four campuses in and around Stockholm. The number of campuses reflects how the institution’s footprint has spread. It now supports a large community of students and staff.
Activity Today
Today, KTH is one of Europe’s leading engineering universities. It has over 13,000 students and approximately 3,500 employees. The scale of its teaching is visible in its catalogue: more than 60 master’s programmes are taught in English. That linguistic scope signals its international reach.
Its role in wider networks is notable. KTH is a member of the UNITE! European University alliance. It is also a member of the University of the Arctic network. These affiliations place it in collaborative frameworks beyond Sweden. In the QS World University Rankings, KTH was ranked #82.
