In the late 1920s, the southeastern Albanian city of Korçë stood as one of the most culturally cosmopolitan urban centers in the southern Balkans. Nestled in a fertile plateau surrounded by the forested Morava mountains, Korçë maintained deep trading connections across the Adriatic and central Europe. In 1928, Italian investor Umberto Umberti joined forces with prominent local merchant Selim Mborja to establish Birra Korça, founding the very first industrial brewery in the nation’s history. Before this landmark enterprise, beer consumption in Albania had relied almost entirely on costly foreign imports or small-scale artisanal homebrews.

Pioneering Brewing Technology and Pure Mountain Springs

The founders chose their location with meticulous precision along the principal avenue of the city, securing direct access to the pure natural springs flowing from Mount Morava. The water’s unique mineral balance proved ideal for bottom-fermenting lager beers, providing an exceptionally crisp and refreshing flavor profile. Umberti imported cutting-edge copper brewing kettles, fermentation vats, and refrigeration machinery from northern Italy and central Europe, training local brewmasters in the exacting traditions of continental beer-making. The facility began producing both amber lagers and robust dark beers that quickly gained acclaim across Albania and neighbouring Balkan markets.

Interwar Flourishing and Enduring Civic Symbolism

Throughout the 1930s, Birra Korça became an integral component of urban sociability in Korçë. The brewery’s adjacent beer hall, celebrated locally as the Birraria, evolved into a beloved gathering space for artists, scholars, and civic leaders. Following the Second World War, the enterprise underwent state nationalization, continuing uninterrupted operations as a vital pillar of Albanian regional industry. Following comprehensive post-millennium modernization that restored the historic brick brewery halls while preserving the original 1928 recipe, Birra Korça remains an iconic cultural institution of the southeastern Balkans.

Today, the historic brewery site along Bulevardi Fan Noli stands as an enduring monument to Albanian interwar industrialization, welcoming visitors who celebrate nearly a century of brewing heritage and culinary tradition.
