The Old Southern Cemetery of Munich

06 September 2026 — 04 October 2026
Stattreisen München e.V.Erlöserkirche

Stattreisen München e.V. has been taking people around their own city on foot since 1989, when discovering a city by walking rather than by bus was still an unusual idea in Munich. The association lists more than a hundred different walks and works with a team of around fifty guides drawn from history, art history, education, geography, architecture, politics and communication. This walk belongs to its Kultur im Grünen strand.

The Alte Südliche Friedhof — Munich’s Old Southern Cemetery — was laid out beyond the city gates as a burial ground for poor people, later served mainly as a plague cemetery, and towards the end of the eighteenth century became the city’s central cemetery. Nobody has been buried there since the Second World War. The walk covers the burial culture of the past and introduces figures from Munich’s history who lie there: Klenze and Kaulbach, Spitzweg and Sckell among them.
