Strawberry Hill is a Gothic Revival villa in Twickenham, London, built by writer and antiquarian Horace Walpole from 1749 onward. It is the prototypical example of the “Strawberry Hill Gothic” architectural style and prefigured the broader Gothic Revival movement of the nineteenth century.
History
Walpole rebuilt the existing house in stages: 1749, 1760, 1772, and 1776. Each phase introduced new Gothic features alongside layers of antiquarian decoration. The project reflected Walpole’s passion for collecting historical objects and creating an interior environment—what he termed “gloomth”—to display them.
Ownership passed through notable hands: Anne Seymour Damer, the Waldegrave family, and Hermann de Stern. In 1923, St Mary’s University College acquired it, continuing its institutional life into the modern era.

Exterior Gothic features include towers and battlements, while the interior dazzles with intentional grandeur. Gilded ceilings, elaborate fireplaces—one designed by Robert Adam—elaborate carved wooden screens, enamelled door handles, and ancestral coats of arms create a dense, theatrical aesthetic. James Essex designed parts of the exterior.
The garden originally featured a large Rococo sea-shell-shaped seat, recreated during a 2012 restoration as part of historic garden conservation efforts.
Cultural significance
Strawberry Hill catalyzed the “Strawberry Hill Gothic” architectural style, a brief but influential movement. Though its precise definition remains disputed, the villa’s impact extended beyond its own walls, inspiring imitations such as Priory Hospital in Roehampton and helping to establish Gothic Revival as a dominant aesthetic of the nineteenth century.
