The university acquired the building in 1949 and converted it for academic use. By the late twentieth century, it became home to drama studies, eventually receiving its current name in recognition of Stephen Joseph’s pioneering work in theatre.

The building’s principal entrance faces west, with a secondary entry on the north side. A rose window adorns the east facade—a remnant of its ecclesiastical past. The austere design reflects both its religious origins and functional adaptation as a teaching facility. The Mansfield Cooper Building, erected to the south-west in the late 1970s, now stands nearby.
