History
Augustus Pugin designed St Peter’s in 1841–42 as the Catholic community of Woolwich sought a church that would embody the principles of the Gothic Revival movement. The parish of St Peter the Apostle was established to serve central Woolwich and the surrounding areas. It remains part of the Archdiocese of Southwark, in the Province of Southwark.

The church’s most striking absence is the projected tower and spire that were never constructed, leaving the design incomplete. The main entrance faces Woolwich New Road, with Brookhill Road forming the eastern boundary.
