Built in 1910 on Constanța’s seafront, this Art Nouveau masterpiece stands as a symbol of the city’s cosmopolitan past. Damaged in two world wars yet repeatedly restored, it reopened to visitors in May 2025 after a comprehensive five-year renovation.
History
The site’s casino history began in 1880 with a wooden structure. Three iterations were constructed before the current building rose on the Peninsulă District waterfront. Designed by Daniel Renard and inaugurated in August 1910, it operated as a gambling establishment for 38 years before World War I brought bombardment by Bulgarian and German forces.
The building survived World War II, though ravaged, and briefly served as a wartime hospital. In 1948 the casino became a community centre; by 1960 it had been converted into a restaurant under the National Office of Tourism. Major repairs in 1986–1988 extended its life until abandonment in the early 21st century. After five years of restoration work, it welcomed visitors again on 21 May 2025.
