Tržan Castle

History
From the 11th century, Tržan Castle functioned as the administrative centre of Modruš County, which was later renamed Modruš-Rijeka County. The castle’s strategic location exploited an ancient road connecting the Roman towns of Senia (modern Senj) and Siscia (modern Sisak)—a vital artery linking Mediterranean and continental Europe. During the 18th century, this route was reconstructed, improved and renamed the Josephina road.
