The castle’s foundations were laid 800 years ago by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword, establishing it as an early stronghold in the Baltic region. The castle’s defining moment came during the Livonian War. In 1577, when besieged by the army of Ivan the Terrible, approximately 300 people within the castle chose mass suicide by detonating gunpowder rather than surrender—a dramatic event that left permanent scars on the structure. Though the castle remained in use through the 17th century, it gradually fell into disuse after the Great Northern War.
