Lielstraupe Castle

A fortified seat transformed across five centuries, Lielstraupe Castle reflects the architectural ambitions of the von Rosen family and the cultural layering of medieval and baroque Latvia.

At a glance

Lielstraupe Castle stands in Straupe Parish, Cēsis Municipality, in the Vidzeme region of central Latvia. Originally erected by the von Rosen family in the 13th century, the stronghold was remodeled in baroque style during the 18th century before expropriation in 1939 ended its period as a private residence.

History

The von Rosen family commissioned the castle’s original construction in the 13th century as a fortified base in the emerging Livonian territories. The village of Straupe developed around the castle throughout the 14th century, creating a feudal settlement pattern typical of the region.

Around 1600, builders added a large tower to strengthen the stronghold. The family was expropriated soon after, losing their seat. Later reacquired by the von Rosens, the castle underwent significant remodeling in the 18th century, when it received its baroque treatment. The estate remained in family hands until 1939, when Hans von Rosen was expropriated and the castle’s role as a private residence ended.

What you see

The castle displays the superimposed styles of different periods. Medieval foundations underpin the structure, while the imposing tower added around 1600 reflects early modern military architecture. The 18th-century baroque remodeling introduced fashionable proportions, decorative elements, and refined detailing characteristic of that era’s aesthetic preferences.

Cultural significance

Lielstraupe Castle exemplifies the architectural patronage of the Baltic German nobility, a class that dominated the cultural landscape of Latvia for centuries. The building’s evolution—from fortress to baroque manor—traces the transformation of regional priorities and tastes, marking the transition from medieval defense to Enlightenment refinement.
