The theater began life as the Musical Comedy Theater of Voronezh in 1931, a house built for operettas and light musical fare. Everything changed in 1960. Composer Tikhon Khrennikov, visiting the city in 1958, pushed for its renaming as the Musical Theater. A reconstruction followed in 1961. On February 25 of that year the company performed Eugene Onegin, with Swan Lake the following night. That pairing of dates is remembered as the true birth of the Opera and Ballet Theater. Conductor and director Anatoli Lioudmiline, a People’s Artist of the RSFSR, shaped the repertoire through the 1960s with Rigoletto, Aida, La Traviata, Carmen, Tosca, The Queen of Spades, Madama Butterfly and The Demon. After his death in 1966, Iaroslav Vochtchak took over, staging Mazeppa, Il Trovatore and A Russian Woman. Under his direction, in 1968, the theater adopted the name it carries today.
