It is dedicated to Blessed Ludovico da Casoria, a 19th-century Franciscan friar born in the Kingdom of Naples who founded charitable works for orphans and the sick. History

Santa Chiara has been a centre of Franciscan learning since its founding by Robert of Anjou in 1310, and successive generations of friars assembled texts in theology, canon law, and philosophy. The library as it exists today is named to honour Ludovico da Casoria, whose cause for canonisation was opened in the 20th century and completed in 2014. The complex suffered severe damage in the 1943 Allied bombing, and the surviving library holdings were carefully preserved during the long restoration period.

Getting there

The complex is in the Spaccanapoli district. Take Naples Metro Line 1 to Dante and walk approximately 10 minutes south-east along Via Benedetto Croce. Buses R2 and E1 stop nearby on Corso Umberto I.
