Overview

Il Salviatino sits on the Via del Salviatino in the Fiesole hills just northeast of Florence, within easy reach of the city centre yet removed from its bustle. The property’s Renaissance origins are visible in its frescoed ceilings, stone staircases, and loggia overlooking terraced gardens. It operates as an independent luxury hotel with a small number of suites and rooms, emphasising personalised service and the cultural experience of staying in a historic Florentine villa.

History

The Villa Salviatino takes its name from the Salviati family, a prominent Florentine banking and noble dynasty with deep ties to the Medici circle. The estate was developed in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries as a typical Florentine country villa — a combination of agricultural land, formal gardens, and a main residential block for the family’s retreat from city life. Like many such villas, it passed through successive noble and bourgeois ownership over the centuries before twentieth-century decline brought it into disrepair. A major restoration programme completed around 2009 converted it into a hotel while preserving the frescoes and architectural fabric of the Renaissance structure.

What you see

The villa’s interior retains original frescoed ceilings and vaulted rooms that serve as the setting for individually decorated suites. Outside, terraced Italianate gardens descend the hillside toward Florence, with an infinity pool positioned to maximise views of the Duomo and Palazzo Vecchio on the city skyline below. The property includes a restaurant sourcing Tuscan produce and a spa housed within the historic fabric of the building. Every public room offers the layered atmosphere of a lived-in Renaissance residence rather than a conventional hotel.

Cultural significance

Il Salviatino represents the Florentine tradition of the villa suburbana — country estates built by wealthy merchant and noble families as symbols of humanist leisure and cultural refinement, a tradition codified by Leon Battista Alberti in the fifteenth century. The Salviati family connection links the property to some of the most consequential networks of Renaissance Florence, including patronage of the arts and participation in the Florentine banking system that financed European cultural production. Staying here offers a direct encounter with the social world of Renaissance Florence that museums can only partially convey.
