The Caledonian Railway opened Glasgow Central on 1 August 1879, establishing it as the northern terminus of the West Coast Main Line—397 miles north of London Euston. Since then, it has served as Glasgow’s principal inter-city gateway to England while connecting passengers to the southern suburbs of Greater Glasgow, the Ayrshire coast, and Clyde Valley destinations.
Today the station remains one of 20 managed by Network Rail, its historical importance secured through category A listed building protection.
