History
Ilya Repin acquired Penaty in 1899 and settled there permanently, drawn by the quiet of Finland and his deep opposition to the Soviet government. For three decades, the house served as both home and studio, where he painted many of his most significant works.
During the Winter War in 1939, Soviet forces occupied Kuokkala—the Finnish town where the estate then stood. The house and gardens sustained severe damage during and after the Second World War. Following the conflict, Kuokkala was renamed Repino in honor of the painter. The estate was carefully restored.
