Portuguese Chapel of Albreda
A fifteenth-century Catholic chapel built by Portuguese explorers, the Portuguese Chapel of Albreda stands among West Africa’s oldest surviving structures. Now stabilized ruins, it testifies to early European-African contact and maritime exploration.

This modest chapel, also known as the Portuguese Chapel of San Domingo, was erected in the fifteenth century when Portuguese navigators were charting African coasts. Located approximately 100 meters west of the Albreda settlement, the ruins comprise more than half their original wall structure, with the back wall surviving intact and topped by a metal cross.
History
Portuguese explorers constructed the chapel during the Age of Discovery as a place of worship and likely as a marker of territorial interest. The structure remained largely forgotten until the twentieth century, when it was designated a national monument before 1995. In 2000, the ruins underwent stabilization to prevent further deterioration.
What you see
The chapel exists now as fragmentary walls rather than a complete building. More than fifty percent of the original masonry persists; the rear wall stands entirely. A metal cross crowns the structure’s highest point, a simple but enduring symbol of its religious purpose and Portuguese origin.

The Portuguese Chapel ranks among the oldest buildings in West Africa and represents an early chapter of European exploration and settlement on the continent. Its presence reflects the complexity of fifteenth-century Atlantic trade networks and missionary endeavors. In 2003, UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site alongside James Island and six related sites, acknowledging its historical and archaeological importance to global heritage.
