Phong Nha – Kẻ Bàng: the Karst Frontier Route
Four stops in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng: the park, the boat-entered Phong Nha Cave, Thiên Đường’s dry immensity and Sơn Đoòng, largest cave passage on earth.
This itinerary enters Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng, the Vietnamese karst park listed by UNESCO in 2003 and since extended across the Lao border to Hin Nam No — one limestone system under two flags. Four stops cover the accessible heart: the national park itself, the boat-entered river galleries of Phong Nha Cave, the boardwalked immensity of Thiên Đường (Paradise) Cave, and Sơn Đoòng, the largest cave passage ever measured.
The sequence is an escalation — river cave, dry cave, superlative — inside a park whose mountains are quite literally hollow. The Lao half remains expedition country; its inclusion in the listing completes the geology this route stands on.
Base in Phong Nha village via Đồng Hới, travel February–August for dry caves and clear rivers, and book guided trips early — Sơn Đoòng sells out about a year ahead. Licensed guides and marked routes only, everywhere in the park.

Do the two show caves first — they calibrate your sense of scale — then decide how much adventure your budget and knees want. Even the day treks here enter caves that would headline any other country.
Getting around
Trains and buses reach Đồng Hới; Phong Nha village is 45 minutes on. Scooters and park shuttles cover the show caves; everything wilder is licensed-operator territory, booked well ahead. Dry season February–August.
