A local resident first discovered Son Doong Cave in 1991. British explorers subsequently studied the system, conducting multiple expeditions to map and document its dimensions. The British Cave Research Association team made significant findings but was forced to halt further exploration during one expedition due to seasonal rains, suggesting passages may extend beyond the currently surveyed 4.5 kilometres.

Most passages rise approximately 80 metres high with comparable widths. The most remarkable section spans nearly 3 kilometres with dimensions of 140 by 140 metres, surpassing the Deer Cave in Borneo as the world’s largest cave passage by volume. A dramatic 14-metre-high rock wall marks an earlier exploration terminus, testament to the cave’s complex internal geography.
