History
Cornwall and West Devon emerged as global leaders in tin and copper mining during the Industrial Revolution. The landscape reflects centuries of intensive extraction, creating distinctive patterns of settlement, infrastructure, and industrial archaeology across the region. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2006 during the 30th Session of the World Heritage Committee in Vilnius.
Conservation efforts have faced challenges. Plans announced in 2011 to restart mining at South Crofty and develop a supermarket at Hayle Harbour prompted the World Heritage Committee to draft a decision in 2014 placing the site on the List of World Heritage in Danger. This proposal was rejected at the 38th Committee Session in Doha, Qatar (July 2014), in favour of continued reactive monitoring.
