Elizabetes iela 10a

Two authors share this facade: Konstantīns Pēkšēns drew the building, and Mikhail Eisenstein — taking over during construction — dressed it in some of the most extravagant Art Nouveau ornament in Riga, down to a motif borrowed from carriage springs.

At a glance

The apartment house at Elizabetes iela 10a went up in 1903, the same year as its famous blue neighbour at 10b. The initial design came from Konstantīns Pēkšēns — the most productive architect of Riga’s Art Nouveau — but the facade owes its character to Mikhail Eisenstein, who modified the project during construction into something far more ornate than first planned. The result is typically eclectic, with unusually extravagant and magnificent Art Nouveau ornamentation, and it marks the beginning of the Eisenstein ensemble that continues along Elizabetes iela and around the corner into Alberta iela.

History

Elizabetes iela 10a captures a handover moment in Riga’s building boom. Pēkšēns, running the busiest architectural practice in the city, supplied the underlying design; Eisenstein, the civil-engineer-turned-facade-artist, reworked the street front while the building was already rising. One detail gives away his other life: among the ornament is a motif derived from carriage springs — a wink from a man whose official post was head of the department of public traffic ways of the Vidzeme provincial government. In the same year Eisenstein completed the adjoining house at 10b, whose giant female heads have since become the face of Riga Art Nouveau on a thousand postcards; 10a is where that ensemble began.

What you see

The facade layers ornament over a conventionally organised apartment block — the eclectic method at its most confident. Its most memorable aperture is on the top floor: a large window in the shape of a keyhole, an Eisenstein signature that recurs across his Riga work. Around it spreads a dense decorative programme of mouldings, masks and metalwork, including the carriage-spring motif that scholars link to Eisenstein’s engineering career. Seen together with 10b next door, the pair reads as a single experiment at two intensities: 10a the quieter statement, 10b the exuberance pushed to its limit.

Practical information

  • Private building — the facade is viewed from the street
  • Elizabetes iela carries traffic: the opposite pavement gives the full elevation, including the keyhole window
  • See it as the first stop of the Eisenstein circuit: 10a, 10b, then around the corner to Alberta iela

Getting there

Elizabetes iela 10a stands in the Quiet Centre, a block from the corner where Antonijas iela leads to Alberta iela — about 15–20 minutes on foot from the Old Town, or a short ride on any bus or trolleybus running along Elizabetes iela toward the embassy district.

Nearby

  • Elizabetes iela 10b — next door; Eisenstein’s 1904 blue facade with the giant heads, the icon of Riga Art Nouveau
  • Alberta iela — around the corner; the street Eisenstein made his open-air gallery
  • Alberta iela 4 — three minutes away; lions and Gorgons above the roofline
  • Riga Art Nouveau Museum — period interiors in Pēkšēns’ own building at Alberta iela 12
