At a glance
The Trinity Lavra of St Sergius at Sergiev Posad is the spiritual heart of the Russian Orthodox Church and its most important monastery. Founded in the 14th century by St Sergius of Radonezh, it grew into a fortified ensemble of cathedrals, churches, a great bell-tower and palaces, built between the 15th and 18th centuries. It was for the Trinity Cathedral here that Andrei Rublev painted his famous icon of the Trinity. The monastery was inscribed by UNESCO in 1993.

History
St Sergius of Radonezh, the most revered of Russian saints, founded a hermitage in the forest north of Moscow around 1337; it grew into the Trinity Monastery, a centre of spiritual and national life that blessed the Russian victory at Kulikovo in 1380. Over the following centuries grand dukes and tsars endowed it with cathedrals and treasures.
Its walls made it a fortress as well as a shrine: it held out through a sixteen-month siege during the Time of Troubles. Raised to the rank of lavra, the highest for a monastery, it remained the heart of Russian Orthodoxy, its ensemble completed by an elegant Baroque bell-tower in the 18th century.
What you see
Within the white walls cluster the monastery’s churches: the white Trinity Cathedral, oldest of all, where pilgrims venerate the relics of St Sergius; the larger Assumption Cathedral with its blue, gold-starred domes; and the soaring blue-and-white bell-tower. Refectory, chapels and a holy spring complete the ensemble.
Pilgrims and visitors fill the courtyards, and the icon-painting and treasures recall the monastery’s role in Russian art.
