Sant’Eustorgio stands in the piazza of its name, near Porta Ticinese. The basilica was probably founded around 344 as a shrine for one of Christianity’s most precious treasures: the remains of the Magi, the wise men said to have visited the infant Jesus.
History
According to tradition, Bishop Eustorgio received the relics of the Magi as a gift from Emperor Constant I. The relics had been housed in the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople after Empress Helena discovered them during her pilgrimage to the Holy Land decades earlier.
Eustorgio undertook the monumental task of transporting the enormous stone sarcophagus to Milan. The journey was interrupted when the oxen pulling the cart collapsed from exhaustion near the city gates. The bishop interpreted this as divine will—a sign that the relics should remain at that very location rather than in the Basilica of Santa Tecla as originally planned.
A new basilica was built outside the city walls to house them. Eustorgio himself asked to be buried beside the Magi, cementing the basilica’s status as both a burial place and a pilgrimage destination.
