Galleria Vecchiato Arte

A contemporary art gallery founded by Dante Vecchiato, championing twentieth-century Italian masters and emerging artists since 1986.

At a glance

Galleria Vecchiato Arte opened in Padua in 1986 as a platform for significant artistic voices. The inaugural exhibition featured leading twentieth-century Italian artists including Mario Sironi, Massimo Campigli, Afro, Alberto Burri, Emilio Vedova and Lucio Fontana. The gallery has evolved to encompass historicized artists, Informal movement practitioners, and contemporary experimentalists.

History

Dante Vecchiato founded the gallery with a vision to present works by established Italian modernists. Lucio Fontana received a significant solo exhibition in 1987, establishing the venue’s commitment to in-depth retrospectives. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the gallery mounted personal exhibitions of Tancredi, Santomaso, Afro and Emilio Vedova, while also championing international figures like César, Arman, Christo and Daniel Spoerri. A landmark Andy Warhol exhibition in 1991 proved particularly memorable, later repeated with success in 2006.

What you see

The gallery operates as a contemporary exhibition space, presenting paintings, sculptures and mixed-media works across its venue in central Padua. Display arrangements vary with each exhibition’s curatorial focus.

Cultural significance

The gallery has served as an important advocate for twentieth-century Italian art and modernism. By pairing established masters with emerging voices, Vecchiato Arte has helped shape dialogue around artistic experimentation in the Veneto region. Today the space increasingly fosters contemporary practice, including Street Art and new media expressions.
