A museum of industrial archaeology housed in the restored Arms Factory of Mongiana, documenting the iron and steel production that defined this Calabrian center during the Bourbon period.
At a glance
MUFAR opened in October 2013 following architectural restoration of the former Mongiana Arms Factory. The museum tells the story of the royal iron and steel works established in this southern Italian municipality between the 18th and 19th centuries, tracing the industrial heritage of the Bourbon kingdom’s metalworking enterprise.
History
The iron and steel center of Mongiana was created during the Bourbon period, becoming a significant industrial hub in Calabria. Production continued into the 19th century until 1872, when iron and steel activities ceased due to lack of orders. The industrial buildings were gradually abandoned and later resold, converted into homes and warehouses at the end of the 1800s.
The Arms Factory itself fell into complete decay by the late 20th century. Rediscovered in the 1970s, it became the focus of a careful conservation and recovery process. Architectural restoration work was completed in October 2013, leading to the establishment of the museum on that date.
What you see
The museum occupies the restored former Arms Factory building, its architectural fabric preserved through meticulous restoration work overseen by architect Gennaro Matacena under RA Consulting srl. The recovered industrial structure now houses exhibits interpreting the site’s manufacturing past.
Cultural significance
MUFAR documents a crucial chapter in southern Italian industrial history. The Mongiana works represent the Bourbon monarchy’s investment in metalworking production and represent an important example of 18th- and 19th-century industrial enterprise in Calabria. The museum preserves both physical infrastructure and collective memory of labor, technology, and economic life in the region.
