The Black Eagle Palace dominates the centre of Oradea, in western Romania, a city that calls itself a capital of Art Nouveau. Built in 1907–1908 by Marcell Komor and Dezső Jakab, it wraps a Y-shaped, glass-roofed shopping passage inside a Secession block of shops, offices, a hotel and a theatre. Over the passage glows its emblem: a black eagle in stained glass.

History
Oradea grew rich around 1900 and built a city of Secession palaces; the Black Eagle was its showpiece, a speculative block packing every modern use into one address. Komor and Jakab, the Secession duo also behind Subotica and Târgu Mureș, gave it a glazed passage so shoppers could pass between three streets under cover.
It took its name and emblem from an older inn on the site. Restored in recent years, the passage and its stained-glass eagle are again the social heart of the city.
What you see
Three arms of a covered arcade meet under a glass roof, lined with shops and cafés, lit by day through the glazing and by night from below. At the crossing, the stained-glass black eagle spreads its wings. Outside, the Secession façades curve and flow around the central square.
