Overview

Gottfried Semper’s opera curves its exedra front to Theaterplatz between Zwinger and Elbe – the house of Wagner’s early premieres (Rienzi, Hollander, Tannhauser) and nine Strauss operas’ births (Salome, Elektra, Rosenkavalier). Burned 1869, rebuilt grander by 1878, incinerated in 1945’s firestorm, and reopened to the day forty years later – 13 February 1985 – with the Freischutz the bombs had interrupted.

History

Semper – 1849’s barricade revolutionary beside Wagner – designed the rebuild from exile by mail; the GDR’s meticulous resurrection became reunification’s preview symbol. The Staatskapelle’s 475-year line – the world’s oldest orchestra – plays its pit.

Architecture and Design

The panther-quadriga rides the entrance bow; Renaissance arcades layer the famous facade’s curve. The five-minute clock above the proscenium – digits since 1841 – times the gilded hall’s evenings; reconstruction’s craft matched marbling and painters’ clouds.

Cultural significance

The Semperoper is destruction-and-rebirth’s German stage – Dresden’s wound and pride – and the repertory shrine where Strauss’ century premiered.
