The Role of Tourism in Global Employment
Tourism represents a significant employment sector globally. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, as of 2017, one in ten jobs worldwide is connected to travel and tourism. The sector accounts for 10 per cent of jobs globally and is recognised as part of the United Nations’ eighth Sustainable Development Goal for its capacity to create dignified and meaningful employment. The organisation works to position tourism as a tool for achieving sustainable development goals, particularly poverty reduction. UNWTO’s membership comprises 158 countries, 6 associate members, and over 500 affiliated members representing the private sector, educational institutions, tourism associations, and local authorities. The 2019 Theme and Beyond
The 2019 World Tourism Day theme emphasised tourism’s role in building social inclusion, peace, and security. A seminar organised by UNWTO in collaboration with the Outlook Responsible Tourism Initiative examined tourism as a future employment sector, providing a platform for small and medium enterprises and social entrepreneurs to explore adaptation to emerging tourism trends, expand their operations, and create greater employment opportunities within their communities. The seminar highlighted how a skilled, high-quality workforce ensures greater competitiveness and innovation, improving employment prospects and facilitating adaptation in evolving markets.
