Ragusa Ibla

One of Sicily’s finest Baroque districts, rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake with fourteen UNESCO-inscribed monuments among its fifty churches and palatial piazzas.

At a glance

Ragusa Ibla is the lower historic district of Ragusa, home to over fifty churches and numerous Baroque-style palaces. It contains fourteen of Ragusa’s eighteen UNESCO World Heritage monuments, recognized as part of the city’s inscribed historic center in 2002. The district remains a living center of religious devotion and cultural tradition.

History

The earthquake of 1693 devastated the ancient city of Ragusa. In its reconstruction, planners implemented ambitious construction projects that established the district’s distinctive late Baroque character. In 1865, Ragusa Ibla became administratively independent, functioning as the autonomous municipality of Ragusa Inferiore until 1922, when it took its present name.

What you see

The district showcases mature Baroque design across its streetscape. The Cathedral of San Giorgio dominates the urban landscape with its monumental presence. Over fifty churches of varying scales punctuate the neighborhood, while grand palaces line the main piazzas and thoroughfares, their façades displaying the ornamental vocabulary characteristic of 18th-century Sicilian Baroque.

Cultural significance

Ragusa Ibla embodies the late Baroque reconstruction of southeastern Sicily following the catastrophic 1693 earthquake. Its fourteen UNESCO monuments represent exceptional examples of this architectural movement. The district sustains centuries-old religious traditions, including the feast of the patron saint San Giorgio, Holy Week observances by the Confraternities, and the forty-hour devotion to the Blessed Sacrament at San Giorgio Cathedral.
