Milan Cathedral
A monumental Gothic cathedral built on the site of two earlier churches, replacing the winter cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore and the summer basilica of Santa Tecla.
At a glance
The Duomo of Milan is among Europe’s largest cathedrals, soaring to a height of 107 metres. Constructed in Italian Gothic style, it stands on the ancient religious foundation of the city, embodying centuries of architectural ambition and civic devotion.
History
The cathedral’s creation followed the collapse of a bell tower. Archbishop Antonio de’Saluzzi, supported by the local population, initiated the reconstruction of a new and larger cathedral on 12 May 1386. This decision meant dismantling the two venerable churches that had previously occupied the site: Santa Maria Maggiore, which served as the winter cathedral, and Santa Tecla, the summer basilica.
Demolition proceeded methodically. Santa Maria Maggiore was removed first, followed by Santa Tecla, which was largely demolished in 1461–1462, though it was partially rebuilt in 1489 before being definitively demolished in 1548.
What you see
The cathedral exemplifies Italian Gothic architecture, distinguished by its soaring proportions and ornamental complexity. Its impressive height of 107 metres dominates the urban landscape and the Piazza del Duomo.
Cultural significance
The Duomo represents a defining moment in Milan’s urban and spiritual identity. Its construction replaced the dual-cathedral system of winter and summer worship, consolidating the city’s religious life into a single monumental structure that reflects both medieval piety and Renaissance aspirations.
