Correr Museum

One of Venice’s most significant museums, the Correr presents the art, civilization and history of the Serenissima through paintings, sculptures and decorative works spanning centuries.

At a glance

The Correr Museum occupies a prominent position in the San Marco district, steps from the basilica and campanile. Its collections showcase Venetian mastery across painting and sculpture, from Byzantine influences through the Renaissance to the neoclassical period. The museum is part of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia network.

History

Founded in 1830, the Correr Museum grew from the private collection of Teodoro Correr, a Venetian nobleman whose bequest formed the institution’s core. The museum has since expanded to represent the full scope of Venetian cultural achievement, preserving works that document the republic’s artistic and civic identity.

What you see

The galleries feature masterworks by Venetian and Italian masters. Gentile Bellini’s Portrait of Doge Mocenigo and Vittore Carpaccio’s Two Venetian Ladies rank among the most celebrated paintings. Antonello da Messina’s Pietà and Giovanni Bellini’s Madonna and Child demonstrate the technical refinement of the period. Jacopo de’ Barbari’s perspectival View of Venice captures the city’s urban magnificence. Antonio Canova’s neoclassical marble sculptures—Orpheus and Eurydice—grace the museum’s spectacular ballroom. Additional works include Crucifixion scenes, religious altarpieces and portrait studies documenting Venetian society and taste.

Cultural significance

The Correr serves as a visual encyclopedia of Venice’s identity. Its collections illustrate how the city synthesized Byzantine, Islamic and European artistic traditions into a distinctive Venetian aesthetic. The works span civic commemoration, religious devotion and humanist learning—the cultural pillars of the republic. The museum preserves evidence of Venice’s role as a bridge between Mediterranean and northern European worlds.
