A masterpiece of Venetian Rococo architecture on the Brenta waterway, Villa Pisani showcases the wealth and artistic ambitions of one of Venice’s most powerful families.
At a glance
Villa Pisani stands on the Naviglio del Brenta at Stra, between Padua and Venice, the finest of the villas that Venetian families built along the Riviera del Brenta. It was begun in 1720 for Alvise Pisani, who became doge of Venice, to designs by Girolamo Frigimelica; after his death in 1732 Francesco Maria Preti carried the work on, and the villa was complete by 1756. The ceiling of its ballroom is Giambattista Tiepolo’s glorification of the Pisani family, painted in 1761. Napoleon bought the villa in 1807; it later became a royal villa of the Habsburgs, passed to the Italian state in 1868, and has been a national museum since 1884. In the park is one of the most important hedge mazes in Europe.
History
The Pisani of Santo Stefano were among the richest families of the Republic, and the villa was built to show it. Work began in 1720 to designs by Girolamo Frigimelica, who also planned the stables that close the park opposite the house. When Frigimelica died in 1732, Francesco Maria Preti took over the main building, which was finished by 1756. It had 114 rooms, a number chosen in homage to Alvise Pisani, the 114th doge of Venice.
In 1761 Giambattista Tiepolo painted the ceiling of the ballroom with the glory of the Pisani family, one of the last great decorations of the Venetian eighteenth century. The Republic fell in 1797, and in July 1807 Napoleon bought the villa from the Pisani, then in financial difficulty, and gave it to his viceroy in Italy, Eugène de Beauharnais. From 1814 it belonged to the Habsburgs as a Villa Reale. The Italian state took possession of it in 1868, and in 1884 it became a museum.
The twentieth century left two traces. In 1911 the long pool in the park, the peschiera, was dug to be used for hydraulic research. In 1934 part of the villa was restored to host the first official meeting between Mussolini and Hitler.
What you see
A long front on the Brenta with a projecting central block, columns rising through two storeys and statues along the roofline, and inside the rooms of a villa that was a royal residence into the nineteenth century. The ballroom is the reason most visitors come: Tiepolo’s ceiling, the Glory of the Pisani Family, often called the Apotheosis, opens the vault to a sky crowded with allegories carrying the family upward.
Behind the house the park runs in a straight line to the stables, a second monumental front by Frigimelica, with the peschiera laid out between the two. To one side is the hedge maze, with a tower at its centre topped by a statue of Minerva.
Cultural significance
Villa Pisani represents the height of Venetian aristocratic patronage during the republic’s final century. The villa was integral to the Brenta tradition, where wealthy families maintained seasonal retreats along the waterway. Tiepolo’s fresco alone marks it as a beacon of eighteenth-century Italian artistic achievement. Today, as a national museum, it preserves this era of refined taste and ambition.

Each photograph is offered by the person who took it — the seller is the photographer named on the image; Cultural Heritage Online runs the payment and delivers the file on their behalf. What you receive. The file as it is held in our archive: the photographer's own original, without the Cultural Heritage Online watermark, unretouched and not enlarged. This is a working archive built over many years by many people, so the files differ — some were taken recently, others years ago with the equipment of their time. Older pictures are usually smaller: a camera from fifteen or twenty years ago simply recorded fewer pixels than a phone does today, so the resolution is lower and the print comes out smaller. We say so rather than hide it. The size, weight, format and year of each one are printed below it, and the print size is given at 300 dpi. Nothing is upscaled to make a number look better. Where the picture on this page has been cropped for the layout, the file you receive is the full frame, which may be wider or taller than what you see here.
