History
The mills operated as an active gunpowder factory for over three centuries, supplying Britain’s military through successive conflicts and industrial transformations. From the mid-1850s onward, the site became a crucible for revolutionary development. Chemists and engineers there pioneered nitro-based explosives and propellants—the “smokeless powder” that would transform warfare and modern industry.
After the Second World War, the facility transitioned entirely from production to research. It served successively as the Explosives Research and Development Establishment, then the Propellants, Explosives and Rocket Motor Establishment, and finally the Royal Armament Research and Development Establishment Waltham Abbey.

Sprawling across its grounds are the original structures, worker buildings, storage facilities, and testing grounds that document three centuries of explosives manufacture. Unlike the demolished mills at Ballincollig and Faversham, Waltham Abbey remains virtually complete—a rare survival in industrial archaeology.
