Poynár House, Oradea
On the corner where Oradea’s main square meets the Crișul Repede river, Ferenc Sztarill’s Poynár House brings the curved lines of the Secession to one of the busiest crossings in the city.

The Poynár House rises where Piața Unirii opens toward the river. Built in 1907 to plans by Ferenc Sztarill, it belongs to the remarkable generation of Secession buildings that gave Oradea its reputation as Romania’s Art Nouveau capital. Its rounded corner volume makes it instantly recognisable.
History
Oradea boomed in the years around 1900, when the city — then part of Austria-Hungary — rebuilt its centre in the newest taste. Ferenc Sztarill, one of the busiest architects of that boom, designed the house for the Poynár family in 1907. It went up in the same years as his Sztarill Palace nearby, and the two buildings still frame the northern edge of the square.
What you see
A corner building whose facade bends with the street line. The upper floors carry the soft, plant-inspired ornament typical of the Hungarian Secession; the ground floor has always held shops, as it does today. Look up at the curved gable that crowns the corner — a signature Sztarill gesture.
Cultural significance
Together with the Black Eagle Palace and the Moskovits buildings, the Poynár House is part of the ensemble that earned Oradea membership in the European Art Nouveau networks. The city’s municipal heritage programme has been restoring these facades one by one, and the square now reads again as a coherent Secession stage-set.

Practical information & getting there
The house stands at the north end of Piața Unirii, by the Saint Ladislaus Bridge. You can see the facade at any time from the square; the ground-floor shops keep normal business hours. Oradea’s other Secession landmarks are all within a ten-minute walk.
