Village of Rango
A characterful medieval village in Trentino, Rango preserves its original structure of interconnected houses, arcades and internal courtyards. Named one of Italy’s most beautiful villages in 2006, it remains a living example of Renaissance mountain settlement.
At a glance
Rango is a frazione of Bleggio Superiore in the Trento province. The village’s compact layout—with houses leaning together and linked by covered passages and courtyards—echoes the defensive logic of medieval fortified towns. A fifteenth-century parish church stands at its heart, and a seasonal Christmas market animates the historic streets during the holiday period.
History
The village achieved official recognition in 2006 when it was included in the circuit of Italy’s most beautiful villages. During the Renaissance, Rango was an active center of clay craftsmanship. Potters produced engobed, sgraffito and glazed ceramics, earthenware jars and decorative stove tiles—trades that shaped the community’s economy and identity for generations.
What you see
The parish church dates to the fifteenth century. The village’s defining feature is its tightly woven urban fabric: ancient stone houses cluster together and communicate through arcades, covered hallways and shared courtyards. This interlocking design mirrors fortified settlement patterns and creates a sheltered microclimate suited to mountain life.
Cultural significance
Rango exemplifies the vernacular architecture and social organization of Alpine communities during the late medieval and Renaissance periods. Its preserved layout documents how mountain villages integrated domestic, commercial and defensive functions within compact, walkable spaces. The tradition of ceramic craftsmanship connects the village to wider traditions of Alpine material culture.
