Collalbo

The principal settlement of the Renon plateau, Collalbo sits at 1,156 metres and serves as the administrative centre and gateway to this Alpine region, reached by a historic mountain railway.

At a glance

Collalbo is the largest inhabited centre on the Renon plateau in South Tyrol, functioning as both the seat of municipal government and a vibrant year-round destination. The town combines Alpine charm with modern amenities: hotels, restaurants, shops, and holiday homes cater to visitors, while schools serve the plateau’s scattered hamlets. The settlement is renowned for its artisanal glass craftsmanship, particularly mosaics and paintings.

History

The Renon railway, inaugurated on 13 August 1907, transformed access to the plateau. The line departs from Piazza Walther in central Bolzano and employs a cogwheel drive system to ascend nearly 1,000 metres in altitude to Maria Assunta, then continues on a gentle grade through Soprabolzano and Stella to Collalbo.

The settlement attracted notable visitors before the First World War. Sigmund Freud spent several summers at Hotel Bemelmans; the Freud-Promenade commemorates his stays.

What you see

Collalbo’s character reflects its dual role as mountain village and administrative hub. Traditional Alpine architecture stands alongside practical civic structures. The Christmas market is celebrated for its distinctive setting: small wooden houses shaped like wagons, which serve as stalls and transport between Soprabolzano and Collalbo, creating a unique seasonal spectacle.

Cultural significance

The Renon railway represents a landmark in Alpine transport engineering, solving the challenge of steep mountain terrain through innovative cogwheel technology. Collalbo’s position as plateau gateway and administrative centre made it essential infrastructure for the region’s development.

The town’s glass-working tradition maintains continuity with South Tyrolean craft heritage. Its association with Freud links it to early 20th-century intellectual history.
