Villa Venier, Contarini

A historic villa on the Brenta Riviera housing frescoed rooms attributed to Renaissance painters and now serving as the operational seat of the Veneto Regional Institute for Villas.

At a glance

Villa Venier, Contarini stands on the Brenta Riviera at Mira Taglio, a celebrated landscape of Venetian country estates. The complex comprises a main residence, two side buildings (barchesse), and a private chapel. Since the early 2010s, it has served as the operational headquarters of the Istituto Regionale Ville Venete (IRVV), the regional institute dedicated to the study and preservation of Venetian villas.

History

The villa became the property of the Veneto Region through IRVV at the end of the 1990s. Its frescoed interiors reflect the villa’s importance as a residence for the Venier and Contarini families, whose names it bears. The decorative cycles suggest patronage of significant artistic talent during the Renaissance period.

What you see

The western guest house (foresteria) contains three rooms decorated with frescoes depicting scenes from classical literature: the Odyssey, Aeneid, and Iliad, attributed to Francesco Ruschi. The eastern barchessa features a frescoed hall, possibly by Daniel van den Dyck, illustrating the story of Psyche. These painted narratives transform the interior spaces into galleries of humanist learning and aristocratic taste.

Cultural significance

Villa Venier, Contarini exemplifies the Venetian villa tradition, where merchant and noble families retreated to curated landscapes and decorated interiors. The frescoes reflect Renaissance engagement with classical texts and mythology. Its current institutional use ensures these artworks remain accessible to scholars and the public.
