Villa San Michele

ANACAPRI, CAMPANIA
Villa San Michele

The clifftop residence of Swedish physician and author Axel Munthe, built on the site of a medieval chapel in Anacapri’s Capodimonte district.

At a glance

Villa San Michele stands on the heights above Anacapri, commanding views across the Tyrrhenian Sea. The house reflects Munthe’s vision of a sanctuary blending Mediterranean beauty with personal memory and spiritual reflection.

History

Axel Munthe arrived in Capri at nineteen, a moment he would later recount in his memoir La Storia di San Michele. Climbing the 777 steps of the Scala Fenice to Capodimonte, he was seized by certainty: this was where he would build his house.

The land was then owned by a carpenter, Maestro Vincenzo, whose simple dwelling included a workshop, vineyard terraces, and a ruined medieval chapel. In 1895, at thirty-eight and newly divorced, Munthe was in position to realize his dream. Appointed personal physician to Queen Victoria of Sweden, he possessed both the professional standing and financial means to begin construction. Villa San Michele took shape from that decision.

What you see

The villa incorporates fragments of the medieval chapel that once stood on the site, weaving Anacapri’s past into Munthe’s vision. The residence showcases his eclectic taste, blending classical elements with Mediterranean vernacular details and offering commanding panoramic vistas.

Cultural significance

Villa San Michele represents more than a private residence; it is the physical embodiment of Munthe’s literary memoir, one of the twentieth century’s most widely read accounts of artistic life on Capri. The house became a refuge for the physician-writer and a testament to the island’s enduring magnetism for European intellectuals and artists.
