Villa Ca’ Vendri
A Renaissance villa six kilometers northeast of Verona, built on land rich with Roman remains and layered histories of conquest and reconstruction.
At a glance
Villa Ca’ Vendri sits in the Valpantena valley, a region saturated with Roman archaeology and early Christian monuments. The name Contrada Vendri is believed to derive from Venus, reflecting the presence of a Roman temple—now buried beneath the church of San Zeno—that once stood on this site. The villa represents a palimpsest of occupation: Roman foundations, medieval structures, and Renaissance expansion coexist within its walls.
History
Roman villas occupied the Valpantena valley during the reign of King Theodoric in the 5th and 6th centuries. Columns with bases discovered in the basements of Ca’ Vendri, along with worked stones reused in the walls, testify to this earlier construction.
Before the villa’s formal construction, a tower and adjoining house already stood on the property, housing an oratory and later an olive press. The villa itself was built before 1585, the year a document recorded it as ‘palazo brusado’ (burnt palace)—damage attributed to a bandit named Ottavio, who reportedly harbored a grudge against the villa’s rightful owners.
What you see
The villa preserves evidence of its composite origins. Roman masonry and architectural fragments are visible in basement walls and foundations, while medieval domestic structures remain integrated into the later Renaissance design. The transition between periods is marked in the fabric of the building itself.
Cultural significance
Villa Ca’ Vendri documents the continuous settlement of the Valpantena valley from antiquity through the Renaissance. The site anchors understanding of how Roman sacred and domestic architecture influenced and was literally incorporated into later Renaissance building practices around Verona.
