History
Palladio transformed an existing medieval palace into a splendid country residence suited to intellectual pursuit. The land had earlier belonged to the Pisani and Giustinian families before passing to the Barbaro family. The spring near the villa held traditional importance, possibly as a place of worship and perhaps the location of an ancient temple. In 1996, Villa Barbaro was inscribed by UNESCO as a world heritage site, alongside other Palladian villas in the Veneto region.
