History
Construction began in 1870 and continued for eleven years, with the building consecrated in 1884. The cathedral’s institutional prominence grew significantly in 1926, when the Diocese of Vilkaviškis was erected and the church elevated to cathedral status.
During World War II, the structure avoided major destruction. However, Soviet authorities later authorized the systematic dismantling of parts of the building to salvage materials for civil construction projects. This gradual deterioration continued through the communist period.
Following Lithuania’s independence and the fall of communism, the cathedral underwent comprehensive reconstruction beginning in 1991. The restoration was completed in 1998, restoring the building to active religious and cultural use.
