History
The valley originated approximately 35,000 years ago, following a violent eruption of the Phlegraean Fields that blanketed the zone between Punta Scutolo and Capo di Sorrento with volcanic debris. Two spring-fed streams—the Casarlano and Sant’Antonino—met just before the valley’s entrance and carved the gorge’s distinctive deep, narrow profile in their relentless search for an outlet to the sea.
In Roman times, Sorrento was traversed by three valleys unified into a single hydrological system. Beyond the Vallone dei Mulini itself, a second valley terminated at Marina Grande, and a third, planted with citrus groves, extended inland toward the town’s hills. The latter two have largely vanished, filled in over centuries to make room for roads and buildings.
